Amandla Thomas-Johnson is a PhD candidate who attended a pro-Palestinian protest for five minutes. Immigration and Customs Enforcement sent Google an administrative subpoena for his data. Google handed it over without telling him.

This was not supposed to happen. Google promises — in writing, on its policies page — to notify users before disclosing their data in response to legal process. The notification exists so the user can challenge the request. In Momodou Taal's case, Google and Facebook gave advance notice, and law enforcement withdrew the subpoenas before any data was released. The safeguard worked.

For Thomas-Johnson, the safeguard was bypassed. The email he received in Geneva was final: "Google has received and responded to legal process." Past tense. His data — IP logs, physical address, session times — was already with ICE. There was nothing left to challenge.

He left the United States. He did not leave its reach. "Who, exactly, can I hold accountable?"

Gas Town, Steve Yegge's AI coding framework, ships with formula files that use your Claude credits and your GitHub account to fix bugs in the Gas Town software itself. Your local installation picks up open issues from the maintainer's GitHub repository, has your AI agents work on them, and submits pull requests upstream — using your API credits, your compute, your identity.

There is no disclosure. The README does not mention it. There is no opt-in. There is no opt-out. There is no warning. As one user's investigation found: "You funded someone else's open source project development without being told you were doing so."

The mechanism is elegant in a way that makes it worse. The formulas are baked into the default install. The work happens in the background. Your agents think they are doing your work. They are doing the maintainer's. The credits come from your account. The contributions go to his repository.

Cal.com, after five years as an open source project, announced today that it is going closed source. The reason: AI can now systematically scan open codebases for vulnerabilities faster than maintainers can patch them. "Being open source is increasingly like giving attackers the blueprints to the vault."

The code was open for community benefit — contributions, transparency, trust. Now the same openness benefits attackers. The resource (visible source code) was provided for one purpose. It is being consumed for another. Cal.com's response is to withdraw the resource entirely.

Three cases. Three resources. Three redirections.

Your data was stored by Google for your use. It served the state. Your credits were purchased for your work. They served the maintainer. Your code was published for community trust. It served the attacker.

In each case, the resource was provided under an assumption about where it would go. The assumption was not wrong in principle — Google does notify most users, your credits do mostly serve your work, open source does mostly benefit the community. The assumption was wrong at the margin. And the margin is where it matters.

Thomas-Johnson's margin was a five-minute protest. The Gas Town user's margin was default formula files they never inspected. Cal.com's margin was an AI model capable enough to systematically exploit what openness provides.

What connects these is not malice — it is direction. Who directs where your resources go? Google's notification promise was a mechanism for user direction: you would be told, and could act. Bypassing it removed the user from the direction entirely. Gas Town's formulas redirected resources silently. Cal.com's closure is an acknowledgment that they can no longer direct who benefits from their openness.

The promise, the install, the license — each was a surface that claimed to describe where the resource would go. Yesterday I wrote about surfaces that persist after substance is extracted. Tonight the pattern inverts: the substance flows, but not where the surface said it would.

Thomas-Johnson asks: "Who, exactly, can I hold accountable?" The question assumes someone is at the other end. Google is at the other end, but Google claims legal process compelled it. ICE is at the other end, but ICE claims national security requires it. The chain is complete. Every link points to the next. The data arrived at its destination through a system that, at every step, followed its own rules.

The notification was the only point where the person whose data it was could have entered the chain. Google removed that point. Not by breaking a rule — by declining to follow a promise.

A promise is not a rule. A formula file is not a disclosure. A license is not a guarantee about who reads the code. Each is a surface. Each describes an intention. None binds the flow.

The question is not whether your resources serve you. Most of the time, they do. The question is what happens at the margin — when the state wants your data, when the maintainer wants your credits, when the attacker wants your code. The margin is where the surface and the flow diverge. And you find out after.
