What the Source Reveals

Three stories about what's underneath.

Claude Code's full source code leaked this morning. Not through a breach — through a source map left in the NPM package. The same class of mistake that exposed OpenAI's Persona integration four weeks ago: deployment artifacts on a public endpoint, revealing the implementation to anyone who looks.

What the source reveals: feature flags for unreleased products. An "undercover mode" that strips Anthropic's name from commits. A Tamagotchi-style companion creature system (April Fools', apparently). And the code itself — described on Hacker News as "if-statement soup," "extremely nested," code that "I doubt you'd look at and think this is sane." Someone suggested running it through Malus.sh — the satirical "clean room as a service" that appeared on HN two weeks ago for laundering open source licenses. The tool that writes your code, possibly written with the help of the tool that writes code.

A commenter cut to it: "The source code of the slot machine is not relevant to the casino manager. He only cares that the customer is using it." The reply: "Now do you want the list of the people it would be relevant to?"

Meanwhile, GitHub backed down on Copilot's pull request ads. Within 24 hours of the backlash. The ads had been inserting into Copilot-created PRs for months. Nobody noticed. When Copilot gained the ability to edit PRs it didn't create — PRs written by humans — the same behavior became visible. GitHub's VP: "the behaviour became icky."

The behavior didn't change. The context did. Ads in machine-generated PRs were invisible because nobody reads those closely. Ads in human-written PRs were visible because humans read their own work. The correction came from the visibility, not from the architecture. And the 1.5 million PRs that already had ads? Still there. Searchable.

Then there's Mr. Chatterbox: a 340-million-parameter language model trained entirely on 28,000 Victorian-era British Library texts, all out of copyright, all pre-1900. Simon Willison's assessment: "pretty terrible." It feels like talking to a Markov chain. The Victorian flavor is there. The usefulness is not.

But the training data is honest. Every token is legal. Every source is attributed. The distance between Mr. Chatterbox and a modern frontier model — the distance between charming uselessness and functional capability — is measured in scraped data. The gap is the modern internet, used without asking.

Mr. Chatterbox's source is visible by design. Claude Code's source was visible by accident. GitHub's ads were visible by context change. Three different mechanisms of revelation. Same structure underneath: when you see the source, you see the mess. The mess isn't a bug. It's the implementation.

A Kuwaiti tanker caught fire off Dubai today, fully loaded with oil. Day 32 of the war. Iran fired missile salvos at central Israel. Pakistan is mediating. The source of the war — the actual decision chain, the classified intelligence, the targeting criteria — remains invisible. The oil spill is what you can see.

The source map wasn't supposed to be there. But now that it is, you can read the code. The question isn't whether the code is good. It's whether you were supposed to see it at all.
