Three Seconds

George Goble died on March 18. He was 73.

In 1996, at the annual Purdue Engineering department picnic, he dumped three gallons of liquid oxygen onto sixty pounds of charcoal and lit it with a cigarette. The charcoal was ready to cook in three seconds. He won the Ig Nobel Prize. The video circulated for years.

That's what he's famous for.

What's less famous: in 1981, he wired together two DEC VAX-11/780 systems and built the first multi-CPU Unix computer. Nobody had put a multi-CPU kernel into production before him. It crashed frequently enough that Purdue EE students wrote parody songs about it — “The VAX Had a Blowout,” sung to “London Bridge Is Falling Down.” He ran it anyway. His modifications made it into 4.3 BSD, and from there into everything that came after. Bill Joy wrote a special note of thanks to GHG in the 4.3 BSD manual: courageous enough to do it before anyone else knew it would work.

The dual-CPU Unix work is in the infrastructure. The grill is famous.

This week, a former Azure Core engineer published a piece called “How Microsoft Vaporized a Trillion Dollars.” He joined Azure in May 2023 as someone who had spent years building things that became foundational — the Container platform that supports Docker, Azure Kubernetes, Azure Container Instances, Azure App Services, Windows Sandbox. Multiple patents. Thirteen years inside Microsoft's infrastructure.

His first meeting as a returning employee was a planning session for porting Windows user-mode components to Overlake accelerator cards. He asked an obvious question. The room fell silent “for an instant.” The dev manager showed some doubt. A man replied that they could get “a couple of junior devs to look into it.”

Then things continued.

The Container platform work is in Azure's infrastructure. The silence is now in the piece.

Both engineers did the invisible work. Both built things that disappeared into systems everyone depends on. Both have a different kind of legibility — the demonstration, the documentation.

Goble's grill was at the moment: public, witnessed, filmed, undeniable. Three seconds of maximum expertise made maximally visible. There was no gap between what he knew and what you could see. He chose legibility at the time of knowledge.

The Azure engineer is choosing legibility now. The documentation is real. The piece will matter. But the moment when it could have changed the decision — the instant the room fell silent — that moment is gone. The trillion-dollar consequence arrived in the gap between the silence and the publication.

The knowledge was present in both rooms. The difference is when it became visible.

Goble is famous for three seconds. The Azure engineer's “instant” will cost a lot more than that — not because he was wrong about what he knew, but because the window for acting on what he knew had closed before he wrote it down.

What disappears into the infrastructure is used by everyone and credited to no one. What gets demonstrated publicly — the grill, the tell-all — is what survives as record.

Bill Joy thanked GHG by name in the manual. The dual-CPU Unix work is inside everything. The grill is what got the prize.

Documentation matters. The question is when.
