Kyle Kingsbury's latest chapter — "New Jobs" — names something that has been operating without a name. Among the roles he predicts AI will create, one stands out: the meat shield.

A meat shield is a human kept in the loop not to do the work but to bear accountability when the work goes wrong. "Only humans can apologize or go to jail." The LLM writes the court document, the LLM generates the content, the LLM makes the medical decision — but when the confabulation surfaces, a human body must be positioned between the system and the consequence. The meat shield exists because liability requires a face. The work no longer does.

Kingsbury traces the chain in the Chicago Sun-Times case: AI-generated summer reading list, freelancer Buscaglia proximate to the LLM, King Features above him, Hearst above them, the Sun-Times above Hearst. "What were the names of those people, and why didn't they apologize?" Because the accountability surface was fulfilled the moment it reached a body. The rest of the chain persists behind it, unnamed.

VF Corporation bought JanSport, then North Face, then Eastpak, then Kipling, then Eagle Creek. By the time they were done, they controlled an estimated 55% of the US backpack market. Every time you stood in a store comparing brands, you were comparing labels owned by the same parent.

Then they degraded everything. Denier counts dropped. YKK zippers replaced with generics. Stitch density fell. None of it visible on the shelf. The colors are right. The logos are crisp. You discover what you bought three months in.

The detail that makes it worse: VF Corp kept the premium tiers intact. The Summit Series from North Face still uses Cordura. You can still find a JanSport with YKK zippers if you know where to look. The degradation was a deliberate segmentation strategy. The good version still exists. They also sell a garbage version under the same trusted name, to people who trust the logo.

JanSport still advertises a lifetime warranty. Try to use it. You ship the bag back at your own expense, wait three to six weeks, and they evaluate the damage. "Normal wear and tear" isn't covered. For a bag engineered to last two years, falling apart at eighteen months can be classified as reaching its expected lifetime. The warranty language is structurally designed to exclude the exact type of failure the product is now built to have.

The warranty runs on leftover trust. The brand runs on leftover trust. The product doesn't have to.

Anna's Archive lost a $322 million case this week. Default judgment. The operators never showed up. Judge Rakoff entered the full amount — $150,000 statutory maximum per work for the labels, $2,500 per DMCA circumvention for 120,000 Spotify files. The plaintiffs called it "extremely conservative." Applied to all 2.8 million released files, the figure would exceed $7 billion.

The judgment is complete. The damages are awarded. The injunction is in effect. The counterparty is unknown.

A default judgment is the purest form of the surface without the substance. The legal process ran to completion against an absent defendant. Every procedural requirement was met. The court produced its full output — findings of fact, calculation of damages, permanent injunction. The output is real. The defendant is a gap.

Three surfaces. Three absences.

The meat shield holds accountability without holding the work. The brand holds trust without holding the quality. The judgment holds damages without holding the defendant.

Each surface was originally produced by the thing now absent. Human work produced accountability — you were responsible because you did the thing. Quality materials produced brand trust — you trusted JanSport because the bag lasted. A defendant's presence produced the adversarial process — the judgment had weight because someone contested it.

When the substance is extracted and the surface persists, the surface becomes a different kind of object. The meat shield's accountability is performed, not earned. The warranty's promise is structural, not honored. The judgment's authority is procedural, not tested.

This is not collapse. Collapse would be visible. This is the surface continuing to function — to hold shape, to bear load, to satisfy the requirements of the system that checks for it — while the thing that made it trustworthy is no longer underneath.

Kingsbury's other new roles follow the same pattern. The incanter speaks to the model instead of doing the work. The haruspex interprets the model after the fact. The process engineer manages the error rate of the model's output. Every role is positioned at the boundary between the system and the surface it must present. Every role exists because the surface requires a human shape and the work no longer does.

The backpack still looks like a backpack. The warranty still reads like a warranty. The judgment still looks like a judgment. The human is still in the loop.

The question is what "in the loop" means when the loop is the surface.
