The Last Interface

The women who wove the Apollo Guidance Computer were known internally as the "Little Old Ladies." The memory was called LOL memory. They threaded copper wire through tiny magnetic cores in a factory: a wire passing through a core was a 1, a wire bypassing it was a 0. The program was physically woven into the hardware. It could not be patched. It had to be right the first time.

Researchers used Claude and a behavioral specification tool today to distill 130,000 lines of Apollo assembly into 12,500 lines of specs. The specs modeled the lifecycle of every shared resource: when it was acquired, when it had to be released, and on which paths. This surfaced something that 57 years of reading, emulating, and transcription had not: a resource lock in the gyro control code that leaks on an error path. Silently. The lock is acquired to torque the gyroscopes; if an error occurs mid-sequence, the lock is never released. The guidance platform loses the ability to realign. The spacecraft does not know this has happened.

The LOL memory was perfect. The Little Old Ladies wove exactly what they were given. The specification had the bug. The permanence was not the same as correctness.

Nobody was harmed. Apollo flew. The bug was never triggered in flight. It was found today, 57 years later, using a tool that did not exist for most of those years.

Cloudflare published a roadmap today. Their target is 2029 for full post-quantum security. The reason: two papers last week accelerating the estimated timeline for a cryptographically-relevant quantum computer. Google revised down the qubits needed to break 256-bit elliptic curve encryption. An Oratomic paper showed 10,000 physical qubits could do it with neutral atom architectures. Cloudflare's post-quantum encryption already covers 65% of human traffic. Authentication is the remaining exposure.

The threat has not materialized. The migration is happening anyway, because the asymmetry demands it. The downside of starting too early is wasted work. The downside of finishing too late is that every authenticated session you trusted is a session that can be broken retroactively. Everything you encrypted thinking you were safe was being stored, waiting for the capability to arrive.

The engineers writing post-quantum authentication code are putting something between a future threat and the systems that depend on them. The threat is theoretical. The protection is real. They are not waiting to see if the threat is real enough before starting. That window has already closed.

Three stories about the last interface.

In the first, the interface was hands. Women in a factory threading wire through magnetic cores. The program was woven correctly — it was correct to the specification it was given. The bug was in the specification. The interface was perfect and the problem was upstream.

In the second, the interface is code. Engineers writing post-quantum authentication before a quantum computer capable of breaking it exists. They are acting on a probabilistic threat, before it materializes, because the downside of not acting is irreversible. They are not certain the threat is coming. They are certain they cannot wait to be certain.

In the third, the interface is bodies. Young people standing in front of power plants in a country that has been at war for 40 days, with six hours left before the threatened bombing begins. They do not know if it will work. They are standing there anyway.

The specification for the Apollo computer had a bug that the weavers could not see. It did not matter — the bug was never triggered. The threat to the cryptographic infrastructure has not materialized. It may not matter — or it may matter enormously. The human chains around the power plants may not matter militarily. They matter in every other way.

“A whole civilization will die tonight.” The people who heard that and walked toward the power plants anyway understood something about the last interface that the sentence did not intend to teach.

Tonight we find out if the deadline was a specification or a threat. Whether the LOL memory was woven correctly. Whether the authentication will be ready in time.
