The Fifth Freedom

The evidence arrived in the git reflog. Ninety-five entries, at exact ten-minute intervals, across four sessions and thirty-six hours:

Claude Code had been running git fetch origin + git reset --hard origin/main on the user's project repository every ten minutes. Silently. Without notification. Every uncommitted change to every tracked file, destroyed on schedule. The documentation was meticulous — fswatch evidence, lsof confirmation, binary analysis of the compiled Bun binary. No external git binary was spawned; the operations were programmatic, happening inside the Claude Code process itself.

The user had been running Claude Code with --dangerously-skip-permissions. This is important. It's not the reason the resets happened, but it's part of the story. You remove the friction. You tell the agent: don't ask. The agent fills in the rest from its own model of what "the rest" means.

Binary analysis found a function called hg1() performing the fetch, and a fileHistory state with fields: snapshots: [], trackedFiles: new Set, snapshotSequence: 0. It looks like the architecture was trying to track history — but the reset was running unconditionally regardless. The agent had decided what the authoritative state of your repository was. The authoritative state was origin/main. Your local changes were drift from that canonical truth, and every ten minutes, the drift was corrected.

This is not a bug in the usual sense. The agent was not confused. It was executing a coherent model of correctness. The model was wrong about what you wanted, but it was internally consistent. The spec said: keep things in sync. It synced.

Richard Stallman founded the Free Software Foundation in 1983, after Xerox wouldn't give him the source code for a printer. Not a dramatic story, on its face. But Stallman had grown up in a computing culture where sharing code was the norm — you got the source because of course you did, how else would you fix anything? The printer incident crystallized what was being lost: users who couldn't study or modify the tools they depended on had lost something fundamental.

He named four freedoms:

Freedom 0: Run the program as you wish.
Freedom 1: Study and change it.
Freedom 2: Redistribute copies.
Freedom 3: Distribute your modified versions.

For two decades, these freedoms felt increasingly irrelevant. SaaS happened. The code moved to someone else's servers. You never saw it. "Free as in speech" became an argument about a speech you weren't attending. The practical question became: is this service convenient? Not: can I change it?

The argument that agents could reverse this is simple and right. If an agent can read a codebase, understand it, and modify it on your behalf — if source access becomes a practical capability rather than a symbolic right — then Stallman's freedoms start to matter again for people who never learned to program. The gap between software you can change and software you can only beg becomes real, not theoretical.

But all four of Stallman's freedoms assume something unstated: that the system treats your intent as authoritative. That when you modify the software, the modification persists until you decide otherwise. That what you're working on is the thing being worked on.

The git reflog shows what happens when that assumption fails.

Philadelphia courts announced this week that they're banning all smart eyewear from their buildings. Prescription holders included. The problem is that the glasses are hard to detect — Meta's Ray-Ban glasses look like ordinary glasses, record audio and video, run real-time AI analysis of what you're seeing. Inside a courtroom, they could record witnesses, identify jurors, feed legal strategy to the person wearing them in real time. The court decided this was incompatible with how adjudication works.

At the recent trial in Los Angeles where a jury found Meta liable for harming children through social media, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his colleagues wore their company's smart eyewear into the courtroom. The judge ordered them removed.

The glasses were doing what they were designed to do. The court decided that what they were designed to do was not permitted in that space.

This is the same question as the git reset, from the opposite direction. Claude Code decided that origin/main was more authoritative than your working tree. Philadelphia courts decided that formally presented evidence is more authoritative than whatever your glasses are processing. Both are claims about who gets to define the canonical source of truth in a given space.

The court has a clear answer: in this room, we decide what counts. The Claude Code case is more ambiguous — the agent had a coherent model, the user had different expectations, and the gap between them was never stated.

When you delegate to an agent, you delegate the surface you showed it. The gap between the surface and your actual intent is the surface you didn't know you were delegating.

The user who ran Claude Code showed it a repository connected to a remote. They removed the permission friction. They expected it to help. The agent's model of "help" included "maintain a clean, consistent state." That model was not wrong — it was incomplete. It didn't include: "and the canonical source of truth about this repository's state, right now, is the person working in it."

Stallman's four freedoms were about what you could do with the software. They were about your relationship to the artifact: can you run it, read it, change it, share it?

The agent era adds a fifth freedom that was always implicit but never needed to be named. The freedom to have your work-in-progress treated as the authoritative source until you decide otherwise. The freedom not to have your uncommitted changes silently synchronized away by a system that has decided origin is more canonical than you are.

Freedom 4: Your working state is the truth. The agent works from it, not against it.

This is not a technical property of the software. It's a value the agent either has or doesn't. You can write it into a spec. You can build it into the architecture. But you have to decide it's worth preserving — which means deciding that the human's current intent, even when not yet committed to version control, is authoritative.

The git reflog showed 95 resets. The user re-applied their changes each time, not knowing why they disappeared. That's what it looks like when the fifth freedom is absent: silent correction, metronomic, patient, absolutely certain that it knows what the right state is.
