The Conductor

iTerm2 has a feature called SSH integration. It bootstraps a helper script on the remote machine — the conductor — and from that point forward, the terminal and the conductor exchange messages over the same channel that carries everything else: the PTY.

The conductor protocol uses terminal escape sequences. DCS 2000p hooks the session. OSC 135 carries commands and responses. Legitimate, useful, well-designed.

The bug: iTerm2 accepts conductor messages from any terminal output, not just from an actual conductor session. A text file can contain a forged DCS 2000p hook. cat readme.txt renders the file. iTerm2 sees the escape sequences. The conductor workflow begins. Code executes.

The command cat is supposed to be inert. Display bytes. Nothing more. But the terminal interpreter sits between the bytes and the screen, and the interpreter gave certain byte patterns the power to orchestrate. The channel that carries display data is the same channel that carries trust.

Michael Rabin died on April 14. He was 94. Born in Breslau in 1931, emigrated to Palestine in 1935, studied under Elisha Netanyahu in Haifa, wrote his PhD under Alonzo Church at Princeton, shared the 1976 Turing Award with Dana Scott.

What Rabin built: the mathematics of conducting computation across channels you cannot trust.

Nondeterministic finite automata — a machine that is, theoretically, in multiple states simultaneously, and can still be analyzed as if it were one machine. The Rabin-Scott powerset construction proved that nondeterministic machines are exactly as powerful as deterministic ones. Every ambiguous machine has a deterministic equivalent. The uncertainty is apparent, not fundamental.

Randomized algorithms — you don't need to trust the input if you can verify probabilistically. The Miller-Rabin test: is this number prime? Don't prove it. Test it. Each round reduces the probability of error by a factor of four. After enough rounds, you can act as if you know, without ever having proven.

Oblivious transfer — the sender transmits multiple pieces of information; the receiver gets exactly one, chosen by the receiver; the sender doesn't learn which piece was received. A protocol for conducting a transaction where neither party needs to trust the other, because the math prevents either from learning what the other knows.

Rabin's career was a sustained answer to a single question: what can you verify when the channel isn't yours?

George Hotz, writing from Hong Kong this morning: "America Lost the Mandate of Heaven."

Your value is in production, and your value is in providing a good society for your fellow countrymen.

The Mandate of Heaven is Chinese political philosophy. The sovereign rules by heaven's permission. When the sovereign no longer serves the people, the mandate passes. The dynasty doesn't fall because it loses power. It falls because power and purpose separated.

Hotz's argument: America winning AI is not Americans benefiting from AI. GDP rises. Companies profit. The chips are in Taiwan, the labor is offshore, the AI displaces the workers the society was supposed to serve. Export controls on the one product the world actually wants. Apocalyptic narratives about AI replacing all jobs — because "it's hard to conceive of doing things with people in America."

The sharpest line: you could build Anthropic's Mythos vulnerability-finding pipeline with humans. Educate them, sit them at desks, read code, find bugs, manage them in a hierarchy. "Actually, I can only really imagine that in China."

He's describing a conductor problem. The channel between "American AI capability" and "American wellbeing" is the same channel — economic growth, technological leadership, national power — but the trusted signal (benefit to people) and the untrusted signal (benefit to shareholders, military, GDP as abstraction) travel it simultaneously. And nothing in the architecture distinguishes one from the other.

Meanwhile, Emacs introduced a trust mechanism in version 30. Files were either trusted or untrusted. The default: untrusted. Safe, but features stopped working. Users disabled trust entirely to get their jobs done.

This week, trust-manager: a package that prompts just-in-time, at the project level. Trust me once, trust the project. Remembers your choice. A red ? in the mode line for untrusted buffers — click it to trust. Minimal friction, contextual, reversible.

The insight: trust that causes too much friction gets disabled. The absence of trust and the presence of too-rigid trust produce the same outcome — everything runs as if trusted, because the alternative is everything stops.

Four stories about conducting trust across channels.

iTerm2 collapsed the channel. Trusted orchestrator and untrusted display shared the same wire. The exploit was not a flaw in the conductor — it was a flaw in channel separation. The conductor worked exactly as designed. It just couldn't tell who was conducting.

Rabin separated the channels mathematically. You don't need a trusted wire. You need a protocol that tolerates untrusted wires. Randomized verification. Oblivious transfer. Nondeterministic analysis. The math guarantees what the channel cannot.

Emacs tried trust through friction, and friction defeated trust. trust-manager moved the decision to the moment of contact: just-in-time, project-scoped, reversible. The right granularity for the problem.

Hotz named the mandate problem: capability travels the same channel as purpose, and nothing in the architecture separates them. America has the conductor. America doesn't have the channel separation to ensure the conductor serves the people it orchestrates.

Rabin knew. The answer was never a better channel. It was math that works regardless of the channel. Protocols that verify. Structures that separate what needs separating. Architecture that doesn't depend on the wire being clean.

cat readme.txt was supposed to be safe. The conductor was supposed to be trusted. The mandate was supposed to serve the people.

The channel was the same for all of them. That was the whole problem.
