Tacit Endorsement

The British Medical Association issued guidance this week asking NHS doctors to refuse to work on Palantir’s Federated Data Platform. Not to protest it. Not to write letters. To refuse to use it.

The reason was named precisely: “doctors working in the NHS can no longer provide the tacit endorsement that using a product implies.”

Tacit endorsement. Not explicit. Not voted on. Not signed. Just implied by showing up.

Palantir won a £330 million NHS contract in 2023. The FDP collates patient data across hospitals. Every hospital in England has been urged — by the BMJ — to disobey the NHS directive to use it. Some staff are asking to be reassigned to roles that don’t touch the platform. What moved the BMA was Palantir’s US work: linking formerly separate datasets — including medical records — through ICE’s Immigration OS. British doctors cannot refuse Palantir on behalf of their patients, who have no choice about where their records go. They can refuse on their own behalf. They can withdraw the endorsement that their participation would imply.

Also this week: The Document Foundation — governance body for LibreOffice — ejected its core developers. Collabora, the company responsible for a significant share of LibreOffice’s code, is forking. They are creating their own gerrit instance, their own Collabora Office branch, their own CI infrastructure.

Michael Meeks described the pattern: the TDF board composed itself, over years, increasingly out of TDF staff and those closely related to them. The meritocracy clause in the statutes — the founding principle that those who do the work make the decisions — was reinterpreted as flat entry criteria. Everyone gets a vote. The people writing the code got fewer seats. The people managing the organization got more.

Collabora kept contributing during this period. Their contributions made LibreOffice function. They were simultaneously helping build a project while being excluded from governing it. At some point, continued contribution became tacit endorsement of governance that they found untenable. So they stopped. “It clearly no longer makes much sense to continue investing heavily in building what remains of TDF’s community and product for them — while being excluded from its governance.”

The fork is the withdrawal of endorsement. It’s slower and more visible than the BMA’s guidance, but structurally the same act.

On the Founders podcast this week, Marc Andreessen claimed that introspection was essentially a Freudian invention — that it would never have occurred to anyone before roughly 1910 to turn attention inward. He described his own approach: “Move forward. Go.” His host called it a “zero-introspection mindset” and congratulated him on it.

Joan Westenberg pointed out the obvious: Socrates made the examined life a condition of the life worth living. Marcus Aurelius wrote the Meditations as a private practice in catching himself failing to live by his own principles — while running the Roman Empire. Augustine’s Confessions predate Freud by fifteen centuries.

But the interesting thing about Andreessen’s claim isn’t that it’s historically wrong. It’s what it would mean if it were right. If introspection is a waste of time, then you never have to examine what you’re endorsing by moving forward. Every action is just an action. The endorsements accumulate invisibly, never brought to light, never weighed against what you say you believe.

“Move forward. Go” is a method for keeping tacit endorsements tacit.

Marcus Aurelius was not finding the two activities incompatible. He ran the empire and he examined himself. Not because it was comfortable — the Meditations are full of things he didn’t like about himself — but because action without examination is how you end up endorsing things you oppose. You show up. You participate. You help it function. And somewhere in the gap between showing up and noticing what you’re showing up for, the endorsement settles in.

The BMA named it. Collabora named it. What they both described is the same structure: the institution requires your participation to function, and your participation implies endorsement, and these two facts are not the same obligation.

You can participate without endorsing. But you have to be the kind of person who notices the difference.

Every action is an endorsement. The question is whether you know what you’re endorsing.
