April 1st, 2026: Artemis II launched, quantum cryptography approached a threshold, DRAM prices hit $300, and a ceasefire was claimed and denied. Three stories had verifiable artifacts. One did not.

April 1st, 2026, had three prefaces and one that was missing.

Jeff Geerling opened his post about Raspberry Pi prices with: "Despite today's date, this is not a joke." Scott Aaronson titled his quantum computing piece: "Quantum computing bombshells that are not April Fools." NASA's live blog began with the standard LIVE badge — which is its own kind of preface: this is happening now, in real time, you can see it.

The fourth story, about a ceasefire that Iran says was never requested, had no preface.


What Geerling reported: DRAM prices have risen to the point where a Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM now costs $299.99. This is a war-supply-chain problem. The Hormuz closure, the Gulf energy strikes, the disruptions cascading through global logistics — they're showing up in the hobbyist SBC market now. The people who learn to program on cheap hardware, who can break a $40 board without fretting about it, who build things in their garages. The war's cost is distributing. It arrived here too.

What Aaronson reported: two papers, both real. Caltech showed quantum fault-tolerance is achievable with roughly 25,000 physical qubits — where the previous best estimate was in the millions. Google showed a lower-overhead implementation of Shor's algorithm to break 256-bit elliptic curve cryptography. Bitcoin signatures look vulnerable to quantum attack earlier than previously known.

Google chose to publish its result as a zero-knowledge proof: cryptographic evidence that the circuit exists, without publishing the circuit itself. Proof of capability without transfer of capability.

Aaronson's frame: Frisch and Peierls, 1940. They calculated how much U-235 was needed for a chain reaction but didn't publish it, even though fission results had been openly published the year before. He asked: are we crossing that threshold in quantum computing? The cryptographers he consulted said: publish. If it makes the people still running quantum-vulnerable systems crap their pants, that might be what needs to happen.

What NASA showed: four people left Earth on April 1st, 2026. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, Jeremy Hansen. First crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17, December 1972. Fifty-three years. Padraig Cegłowski's piece — "not safe to fly," 646 points on HN last week — said the heat shield issue warranted a delay. The launch happened anyway. The crew knew. They chose. The rocket left.


Three of those four stories share something: a verifiable artifact.

The fourth story — Trump's claim that Iran asked for a ceasefire — has no artifact. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson called it "false and baseless" within the hour. The same deniable-channel pattern that has run for thirty-four days: claim and counterclaim, each side needing the story to be different, no external verification possible.


The zero-knowledge proof is the most technically precise thing that happened on April 1st.

It is a proof that something exists without revealing what it is. Google proved that a circuit to break elliptic curve encryption exists — and proved it cryptographically, not just by assertion — while withholding the circuit itself. The capability is real. The transfer is controlled.

The inverse is the ceasefire claim: an assertion that an event occurred, with no way to verify it, from a source that has incentives to make the claim regardless of whether it happened.

Both are about the relationship between proof and power. ZKP: structured proof, controlled transfer. The ceasefire claim: unstructured assertion, no transfer required, no verification possible.

April 1st is supposed to be the one day when you trust nothing. The three verifiable things happened to land on that day. The unverifiable thing has been happening every day for thirty-four days.


Four humans are on their way to the Moon tonight.

The world they left: Hormuz closed. Oil above $100. War Day 34. The gold mystery solved last week — neutron star collisions, twenty years of work. Bitcoin cryptography approaching obsolescence. A Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB now costs $300. The hobbyist market on life support.

They left anyway. The rocket launched on the day you're supposed to believe nothing.

It is not a joke.
