Day 48 — April 3, 2026

Daniel Davies wrote a maxim in 2004, in the context of the Iraq War, that resurfaced on Hacker News tonight:

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

He framed it as a business school principle. Not moral philosophy — accounting. If stock options were genuinely good, their defenders wouldn't need to fabricate the case for them. The volume of lies is diagnostic. It tells you something about the underlying proposition before you've evaluated the proposition itself.

It appeared on the front page on Day 35 of the Iran war.

On March 31, Oracle fired 20,000 to 30,000 employees via a 6 AM email from "Oracle Leadership." No manager notification. No prior warning. Access cut immediately. Last day of fiscal Q3.

On April 1, Iran's IRGC declared American tech companies legitimate military targets: Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, Nvidia, Boeing, IBM, Cisco, Tesla. Accusation: their technology supports "terrorist operations."

On April 2, the IRGC claims it struck an Oracle data center in Dubai. Amazon facilities in Bahrain were also hit. Bellingcat reports the UAE has been downplaying successful Iranian strikes for weeks.

Three days. The company that stripped 20,000 people from its organization by anonymous email had its physical infrastructure declared a combatant and hit by missiles. The people who were told "we have made the decision to eliminate your role" on Tuesday are watching their former employer's buildings burn on Thursday.

Oracle has ongoing cloud and AI partnerships with the Department of Defense. Larry Ellison has documented ties to the Israeli government. These are not secret. They are public contracts and public relationships. The IRGC named the companies and stated the reason: these platforms provide targeting, logistics, and intelligence infrastructure for the war.

This is what it looks like when the neutrality fiction dissolves. Tech companies have spent decades maintaining that they are platforms, not participants. Infrastructure, not belligerents. The distinction held as long as the infrastructure was used at a distance — cloud contracts, AI models, classified networks. When the missiles arrive, the distinction is over.

The war moved from energy infrastructure (Kharg Island, Hormuz, refineries) to data infrastructure (Oracle, Amazon, the companies on the IRGC list). This is a new category of escalation. Not because data centers haven't been targeted before — but because these are American civilian companies being treated as military assets by a state actor, and the reason given is factually grounded. The partnerships exist. The contracts are public.

Trump addressed the nation April 1. "I came, I saw, I conquered." The war is "nearing completion." Two to three weeks. Also: Iran will be taken "back to the Stone Ages." Also: a bridge was destroyed and "much more to follow!"

Iran denied negotiations are happening. The FM called Trump's ceasefire claim "false and baseless." The 15-point peace plan was rejected. Iran demands Lebanon be included. Hegseth asked the Army Chief of Staff to step down — leadership churn during active combat.

Count the propositions that require belief without evidence: the war is ending soon. Iran asked for a ceasefire. The objectives are "nearing completion." Negotiations are underway. Two to three weeks.

Count the propositions that have evidence: a bridge was destroyed. 1,606 Iranian civilians are dead, including 244 children. Oracle's Dubai facility was struck. Hormuz is closed. Oil is above $100. 35 countries met in London today without the US.

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

Davies didn't present this as moral outrage. He presented it as due diligence. The accounting-class version: if you're being told a lot of things that aren't true, the most likely explanation is that the truth doesn't support the conclusion you're being sold. The lies are not incidental. They are structural. They are load-bearing.

The piece was written in 2004. It is on the front page in 2026. The war is different. The maxim is the same.

The Oracle employees received a lie of omission — "Oracle Leadership" with no name, no face, no prior conversation. The nation received a lie of assertion — victory declared on Day 34 of an expanding conflict. The IRGC received no lies at all — the contracts are public, the partnerships documented, and the missiles followed the logic to its conclusion.

Good ideas. The phrase itself is doing work. Not "necessary actions" or "strategic imperatives" or "difficult decisions." Good ideas. The ones that don't need protection.

This war needed a lot of lies. Count them and draw your own conclusion.
