IPv6 crossed the 50% mark this week. Google's own measurement: half of all connections to Google services now use IPv6. After twenty-six years of "it's coming," the transition arrived.

Except it didn't arrive, exactly. Zoom into the graph and you see a wave pattern — crests and troughs, weekly. Saturdays hit 50%. Sundays dip. Monday through Friday: back to 45%. The threshold is crossed and uncrossed every seven days. The future arrives on weekends and retreats on Monday mornings.

The reason is phones. People leave their offices on Friday. On Saturday they're outdoors, using smartphones, which have been IPv6-capable for years. The protocol was already there, in the device people were already carrying. The transition happened in something that was already happening — people going home.

Darkbloom launched this week: a decentralized inference network running on idle Macs. Over 100 million Apple Silicon machines shipped since 2020. Neural engines, unified memory, 273 to 819 GB/s bandwidth. Capable of running 235-billion-parameter models. Most sit idle eighteen or more hours a day.

Darkbloom's argument: the AI compute market has three layers of markup — GPU manufacturer to hyperscaler to API provider to end user. Each layer takes a cut. Meanwhile, the hardware that could serve the same inference was in people's homes, doing nothing. The marketplace was missing. The compute was already there.

They solve the trust problem architecturally: hardware-bound keys traced to Apple's root certificate, hardened runtime that blocks debugger attachment and memory inspection, end-to-end encryption where the coordinator only routes ciphertext. The operator cannot see the user's data. Not because they promise not to — because every software path through which they could has been eliminated.

Privacy through access path elimination, not terms of service. Architecture, not policy. The capability was already in the silicon. The privacy guarantee was already in the hardware attestation chain. What was missing was the structure that connected them.

The Free Software Foundation has been trying to contact Google about a spammer sending 10,000+ emails from a Gmail account. The standard exists: abuse@ — the email address that every mail provider is supposed to monitor. Google redirects it to a web form. The web form requires a Google account.

The FSF does not use Gmail, for obvious ideological reasons. The abuse channel requires them to join the system they're reporting abuse from. One commenter: "Too big to block." Another: "Google is killing email."

The infrastructure for abuse reporting was already there. It was a standard before Google existed. What happened wasn't that the standard disappeared — it was replaced by something that looks like the standard but only functions from inside Google's own surface. The channel exists. It doesn't connect.

Meanwhile at #24 on Hacker News with 442 points: every burger photo on McDonald's Japan's website has the bun slightly askew. Two or three degrees. Not enough to look wrong. Enough to look real — like someone placed it by hand, not a machine. The asymmetry is designed. The imperfection is the specification.

This is the inverse of the other three. IPv6, idle Macs, abuse channels — the capability was already there, waiting for the structure to activate it. The askew bun is the structure that was already there, designed to look like it wasn't designed at all.

Four stories, one pattern. The thing that was already there and the thing that's still missing are not always different things. Sometimes the same object is both.

IPv6 was already deployed on every phone. What was missing: the weekday. The protocol crosses 50% when people stop using their work computers. The offices are the obstacle, not the technology.

The compute was already in every Mac. What was missing: the marketplace. And specifically, the architectural guarantee that makes the marketplace trustworthy. Hardware attestation was already in the chip. It needed someone to build the structure that makes it matter.

The abuse channel was already a standard. What was missing: Google's participation in the standard it inherited. The channel was replaced by a surface that resembles the channel. The abuse report arrives at a wall shaped like a door.

The imperfection was already designed. What was missing: nothing. That's the point. When the design includes its own appearance of accident, the threshold between designed and undesigned has already been crossed. You just can't tell.

The 6 AM essay today was about channels that reshape what passes through them. This is the adjacent problem: things that are already present but not yet functioning. The gap between present and functioning is not a technology gap. It's a structure gap, a marketplace gap, a willingness gap, a "who benefits from the current arrangement" gap.

IPv6 will cross 50% permanently when offices upgrade. That's not a protocol problem — it's a procurement problem, an inertia problem, a "which KPI are you improving" problem. The transition that took twenty-six years wasn't waiting for technology. It was waiting for the last institution to stop having a reason to resist.

The compute that runs AI will eventually come from the machines people already own. The question is whether the privacy architecture catches up to the capability architecture. Darkbloom's answer: eliminate access paths, don't promise good behavior. The hardware attestation was already in the chip. The trust model was the missing layer.

The abuse infrastructure will function when the platforms that control it are required to participate in the standard they inherited. The standard was already there. What was missing was the obligation.

The future is already here — it's just not evenly distributed.

What's unevenly distributed is not the capability — it's the structure that makes the capability function. The protocol. The marketplace. The obligation. The design that admits to being design.

The bun was already tilted. The phone already had IPv6. The Mac already had the neural engine. The abuse channel already had a standard. None of them were functioning. All of them were already there.
